Carson McCullers's The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter (1940) created a literary sensation when published, enjoying a meteoric rise to the top of the bestseller lists; the Modern Library ranked the novel seventeenth on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. Time magazine included it in TIME 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005
Written when McCuller's was just 23 years old, The Heart is a Lonely Hunger is set in a small Georgia mill town in the late 1930s. At the center, like the hub of a wheel, is John Singer, who rents a room in the Kelly house after his fellow deaf companion, Spiros Antonapoulos, is sent away to an asylum. The amiable Singer is a confidant for four of the town's misfits—Mick Kelly, a teenage girl who dreams of becoming a trained musician; Benedict Mady Copeland, the town's black doctor; Jake Blount, an alcoholic socialist; and Biff Brannon, the owner of the local café.
Each of these four characters regularly visits Singer, telling him about the injustices and pain in their lives. Each outcast believes that only Singer can understand his or her loneliness, although Singer reveals little of himself to them. He does, however, open himself to Antonapoulos through visits and letters. Singer even saves his hard-earned money to buy a movie projector for his friend. Not until the novel's startling climax do any of these lonely souls fully appreciate Singer's importance in their lives.

Idea: Add Advanced Search Function for Country of Origin and Language for BOOKS!I try to upload books from different countries, translated into English as that is my native language. AND a lot of Canadian lit. I love to read literature from around the world, but even though I am familiar with a number of authors from other countries, I certainly don't know them all! Unless a book from China (for example) has been listed as published in English translation in a "best sellers" list in an English language publication, it's not easy to find authors and titles. Personally, I'd love to be able to search for recently uploaded books by authors in Japan, China, Nigeria, French Canada etc. etc. that are available in English. In my KAT searches I sometimes come across books translated or only available in Russian, Romanian, French, etc, and I'm sure people from THOSE countries would also appreciate being able to search for a book based on country of origin, and what language the book is available in. We can search language in the film and tv categories, so why not add that function to the book category? Thanks for reading, and I hope you like my idea
